In the US 4 July means Independence Day (hello to my American readers, happy celebrating!) but in the UK it is Independents' Day.

Today is a day when everyone is encouraged to visit their local, independent stores and show your support for them. It's great that we have diverse high streets with a mixture of big supermarkets, chain stores and independent shops but it will only stay that way if shoppers make use of them all, not just the giant retailers.
You know that interesting-looking shop that you've been meaning to pop into for ages but somehow haven't managed to? Well, today is the day to step inside and look around. It could be the bakery, butcher, fishmonger, greengrocer, cafe, clothes store, restaurant, book shop, tea room, fabric store, newsagent, gift shop… the list goes on but that list will get a lot shorter if we don't all make use of these independent stores run by families, friends, individuals and co-ops. Hidden within those walls you might just find a wide selection of products, knowledgable staff, great prices and fantastic service. All on your doorstep.
